Each time I meet with a new couple to discuss their list of hopes and dreams for the perfect wedding, I always have one thing I want them to consider for their special day. With all the traditions and things that people and family tell you that you “have” to do, remember to plan your wedding with the details that YOU want, and a non-traditional wedding is an exciting option.
There are no hard and fast rules.
Old traditions are just that, traditions, so you should feel free to make the event your own and do things that suit the two of you.
For example, a couple asked me if they had to do the garter toss and bouquet toss at their wedding. I told them that of course they didn’t have to do that. Another couple wanted to have a best girlfriend stand with the groom’s party, with three flower girls and no ring bearer. It is all perfectly fine, because it is what the couple wanted.
At my own wedding reception, we did not have a dance floor or formal dancing. My husband and I wanted to have conversations with our guests while enjoying food and wine pairings. We spent the entire evening reminiscing and laughing with our families and closest friends, with a background of our favorite music.
You can express who you are as a couple through your theme and decorations.
Whether it is “music” and you employ CD covers as your table numbers, or “beach” individually writing guest names on sand dollars for each place setting, or “board game” with centerpieces drawing from a variety of games set out to play at each table. These unique ideas make your wedding special to you and memorable to your guests.
If you choose to color outside the lines with non-traditional wedding ideas…
You are not limited – you can truly create the day you want. If you do, no other wedding will be exactly like yours, and it will always be that much more special to you.
